Back when Renault-Nissan announced the new Datsun brand as their entry-level emerging market brand, my first thought was “Ok.... so what’s Dacia, then?” It just doesn’t make sense to me.

It's for people who are cross-shopping with Tatas, as opposed to Dacia, where people are cross-shopping with Mirages.

It just seems unnecessary. I think everything under the Datsun brand could have been sold under the Dacia brand without it being a problem.

Dacia is the brand for submerging markets and Datsun is the brand for emerging markets.
So... Datsun is for China, Dacia is for Zimbabwe and maybe also Russia.

Dacia seems to be becoming the good-value-decent-quality budget brand in Europe, so that makes it an aspirational brand in poorer places. There’s room for real crap in below it, and they wouldn’t want to damage the Dacia brand values they’re establishing.

Dacia works like this: Take old Renault bits, add utilitarian body designed by top romanian styling guru, make as cheaply as possible but good enough so europeans will buy it. In short, sell a car that is just good enough at used car price, but with vaguely modern safety equipment and a warranty.
Modern Datsun works like this: Take old Nissan bits, add utilitarian body designed by top indian styling guru, make as cheaply as possible and don’t give a shit about quality because its for an emerging market, and the intended buyer has never owned a car anyway. In short, sell something cheap to people who have
a) never owned a car and don’t know better (yet)
b) can’t afford anything else.
